Why we wrote this page

If all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. We have built in steel for years and believe in the method — but it is a tool, not an ideology. There are projects where steel cannot play its strengths and another construction method delivers the better result. Concealing those cases would be good for short-term business and bad for everything else: for your project, for our reference list, for the trust a family-run company lives on. So here are the four most common cases where we advise against steel — before you invest time in inquiries.

Small buildings without any span requirement

The economics of steel construction come from prefabrication and large column-free floors. For a small workshop, a double garage or an ancillary building spanning only a few metres, there is simply nothing to bridge: the advantage evaporates, while the fixed costs for engineering, fabrication, transport and crane erection remain. A local builder erecting the building conventionally in masonry is often more economical here — and closer at hand for later maintenance. Our honest recommendation in such cases: get a quote from the masonry firm around the corner, not from a steel fabricator two counties away.

Prestige architecture in fair-faced concrete or brick

Some buildings are meant not just to function but to make a statement: the headquarters in fair-faced concrete, the administration building with a clinker brick façade, architecture that is supposed to radiate weight and permanence. Steel can carry such buildings structurally — but their design identity comes from the massive material itself, and precisely that cannot be meaningfully translated into steel. Where architectural ambition leads the project and exposed concrete or brickwork is the defining element, a massive-construction contractor and the architect are the right team. Steel then remains what it does well there: an option for roof structures, annexes or long interior spans in the background.

Strict fire requirements without the budget for them

Steel loses load-bearing capacity at high temperatures. If the fire safety concept demands a high fire-resistance period for the structure — in multi-storey buildings or special uses, for instance — the steel must be protected: with intumescent coatings, cladding or compensating systems engineering. This is technically solved and built every day, but it costs money. If the budget cannot carry those measures, the result is a bad compromise: a steel building whose price advantage is eaten up by fire protection. In such cases we do the honest arithmetic — and if concrete, with its built-in fire resistance, is more economical, we say so in the first conversation, not in a change order.

Short-term temporary buildings: renting beats building

A steel hall is a building for decades — with a permit procedure, foundations and everything that goes with them. If you only need to bridge a gap — a season, a fixed-term contract, the time until a relocation — a new build is the wrong advice: permitting and construction time are out of all proportion to the period of use. There is a dedicated market for such cases: rentable lightweight and system halls that stand within days, and existing space available immediately. That is not our business — but it would be dishonest to sell you a forty-year solution for a twelve-month problem.

And what steel is built for

After four refusals, the cross-check: steel is the right choice when floor area, span and changeability matter. Production and warehouse halls, logistics space, exhibition buildings, operations with crane runways, buildings that must grow with the business — that is where the method plays its strengths: short construction time through parallel fabrication, column-free floors, extendable frames, material with real value at the end of use. Whether your project falls into this category is usually settled faster in one conversation than in any amount of research.
